Big news, everyone! Jaume Plensa is permanently coming to uptown Charlotte! This world famous artist, known for sculptures of seated figures or human heads, already has a work on the campus of Davidson College and will imprint Charlotte a second time with the sculpture AINSA III (2015) at UNC Charlotte’s uptown campus.
The Queen’s Table, an anonymous group of donors, will gift the sculpture to the school. Founded in 1991, this group has given a number of public works to the city over the years. They function quite differently from other public art groups (ASC and CATS Art-in-Transit) in that they don’t take general community opinions into consideration when selecting art, artists, and placement. Sometimes this is a bad thing, but in this case it’s really great!
We’re still coming down from the high of the Plensa show at Davidson College Art Galleries last year, and this new sculpture is exactly the fix we needed. We can’t wait to hear the artist speak tomorrow (Tuesday) at 2 pm, and to see the new work! Congrats to everyone at UNC Charlotte on this fabulous addition to their collection!
