Since 2001, PBS has been producing Art21, a fantastic series about Contemporary 21st century artists. On a recent sick day, we spent a little time revisiting some of our favorite episodes, along with checking out some newer ones. Of particular note for us lately are the New York Close Up shorts with artists like LaToya Ruby Frazier, Rashid Johnson, and Mika Rottenberg. We also like the Artist to Artist series, including Kerry James Marshall at Prospect.3 and Diana Al-Hadid at the Venice Biennale.
If you are interested in some longer videos around a theme, there are 7 seasons, each with 4 thematic episodes. There are plenty of great ones to choose from including this one about Place from the very first season in 2001. The nearly hour-long episode features Laurie Anderson, Richard Serra, Sally Mann, Barry McGee, Margaret Kilgallen, and Pepón Osorio. But if you don’t have a full hour to devote, you can also just check out some of the shorts above – or search for segments about specific artists – and add some creative inspiration to your life in under 8 minutes a day.
