Envision & Empower provides an evening opportunity for the Charlotte community to come together and celebrate the transformative power of arts education on children in our community. For Envision & Empower, the YAMs partnered with Behailu Academy, an arts-based youth development program that empowers youth to find and use their voices through the arts, academics, and community service. Performances by Behailu Academy students will follow remarks by Senator Jeff Jackson, who will share his thoughts on arts education.



Reception for Allan deSouza and Alia Syed: Contents Under Pressure

Allan deSouza is a multimedia artist whose work investigates the themes of travel, diaspora, and migration and their role in forming the racial and sexual identity of the body in a social and psychological context. Alia Syed is a British filmmaker and artist whose work integrates her interest in storytelling, history, and visual narrative. Her work, including the two that are being presented at Davidson College, Panopticon Letters: Missive I and On a Wing and a Prayer, examine notions of cultural difference and gender in relation to diaspora and location.

Take a trip to a simpler time. A time of psychedelic music, black lights and lava lamps. Hit up the bar to get your creative juices flowing ($3 per glass), and don’t forget to get your photo taken with the magical gnome! Participants receive free access to unlimited paint, brushes and easel.
