Daily: Curator’s Pick

This installment of our Curator’s pick post – basically, a “best of” or “favorite” pick by a local curator or art dealer from the works currently on view at their own institution comes to you from Lauren Harkey. Lauren is Christie Taylor’s new business partner at Hodges Taylor Art Consultancy, established in 1980 by Dot Hodges and Christie Taylor.

Robert Stuart, Honeycomb

Robert Stuart, Honeycomb, 2007, oil and wax on paper, 22.5 x 15 inches.

Lauren’s selection is Robert Stuart’s small-scale oil and wax on paper work, Honeycomb. This piece, on display in their office and private gallery, is exemplary of their consulting services. Through their art consulting efforts over the years, Hodges Taylor has helped place Stuart’s work in many notable public collections such as The Ritz-Carlton Charlotte, Neiman Marcus Charlotte and Parker Poe, as well as private collections.

Lauren elaborated on her pick: “Reliant on light as his primary subject matter, Stuart’s large-scale canvases encompass a viewer’s periphery. Movement toward the essential has always been a major focus in Stuart’s paintings. An art historian once told Stuart that his paintings looked as if they were by an abstract painter who went outside. Stuart’s minimal canvases mimic the stillness of one of America’s greatest Abstractionists, Agnes Martin, whom Stuart greatly admires. Yet, Stuart’s near florescent application of color, set in oil and wax, channels Minimalist icon Dan Flavin’s use of light as medium. Honeycomb is an intimate example of Stuart’s light-filled landscapes that appears lit from within.”

Lauren earned a Bachelor’s degree in Art History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Masters of Letters in Modern and Contemporary Art from the University of Glasgow with Christie’s Education in London. Lauren also holds a law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Lauren currently serves as the Vice President of the Young Affiliates of the Mint Museum and co-chaired their first art show, 80×80: An Art Show, held at The Mint Uptown this past June.

Hodges Taylor Art Consultancy offers a full range of consulting services focusing on businesses and individual, private collectors and operates a private gallery space. They are located in Dilworth Artisan Station, Suite 25C and are open by appointment only. To get in touch, email Lauren: lharkey@hodgestaylor.com.
