“To enhance the quality of life for our community by reflecting its cultural values and artistic vitality through public art.”
This is the mission of the Women’s Art Initiative (WAI) in Rock Hill, SC. Consisting of a board of 17 members who are raise funds, select and commission public art projects to improve the city’s quality of life. We here at HappeningsCLT firmly believe in the power of public art to represent, educate, and unify communities, so we are fully in support of this group and their efforts.
You can see their first project, installed just last month on the lawn of the Historic White Home in downtown Rock Hill. Ann Evolving is a steel sculpture honoring “The Mother of Rock Hill”, Ann Hutchison White.Created by New York artist Kathy Bruce the sculpture is a female figure in a trellis-like hoop skirt in which Cross Vines and Confederate Jasmine are planted to climb-up and grow continuously through the skirt. The design up the front panel of Ann’s dress is based on the woodwork pattern of the White House balcony. The dress itself is styled after American Civil War period women’s fashion. We cannot wait to see Ann evolve with the emerging flora.
