We are pleased to announce the recipients of the first ever HappeningsCLT grant. We have spent the last few weeks carefully reviewing the images, statements and project ideas of the 58 artists who applied for our $2,000 grant, which we proudly offer in collaboration with Hygge Coworking. After creating a short list of ten outstanding candidates, we ultimately decided to offer two grants of $1,000 each to two applicants, Kenny Nguyen and Andrea Vail.
The work of both of these artists is worth funding because it exemplifies a forward momentum we see in Charlotte’s visual art culture. Both of these artists are focused in their practice but also embrace new new ideas and materials. They were able to demonstrate in their applications that they are serious professionals who have a distinct vision.
Painter Quoctrung Kenny Nguyen was born and raised in Vietnam, but now calls NC home. He holds BFA degrees in Fashion Design from the Vietnam National University of Art and Architecture and in Painting from University of North Carolina Charlotte. Kenny applied for funds to buy supplies that will enable him to explore new media, specifically silk painting. We were intrigued by his past work and are excited to see what he is able to produce given this funding.
Andrea Vail holds an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and a BFA from UNC Charlotte. Her work resides in the realms of sculpture and social engagement. She applied for funds to attend a conference in August. Her attendance at the last two conferences in 2013 and 2015 led to new bodies of work and two community projects. She has since informed us that she will play an active role at this conference as a juror.
